Top 5 - Anime

Man, it has been a while since I did a Top 5, huh?

OK, so I have been watching a lot of anime lately.  Like any other genre of entertainment, some are good, some are great and some aren't my cup of tea.  Oddly enough, in the realm of anime I find my tastes are greatly different than what I normally would watch.  You'll never catch me watching The Notebook, but find me a well written, sappy romantic anime and I'm hooked.  But as a guy, giant robots and explosions also work very well.

I blame [adult swim] and Toonami for really getting me to watch anime.  I watched Speed Racer and Voltron when I was a kid, but DragonBall Z was really the first series I had to watch.  Lately, Bleach has earned a half-hour of my time on Saturday nights.  And I was really starting to get into Deadman Wonderland on Toonami, when they suddenly stopped showing episodes.  I haven't bothered to see why.  Anyway, Netflix has/had a pretty decent collection of anime and I have attempted to watch most (again, some good, some not so good...in my opinion.)

So without further ado, here is MY Top 5 anime series...again, just my opinion.

5 - Highschool of the Dead

Zombies, makeshift weapons, zombies, tones of blood, zombies, interesting character back stories, zombies, a budding love triangle, zombies, fanservice...
The only thing wrong with this series was the length.  One season only.  The original manga it is based on goes a bit further into the characters quest to find their parent during a zombie apocalypse, but it too was cut short, which might explain there only being one season of the show.  It's worth checking out though, if you don't mind the never resolved cliffhangers.

4 -Gurren Lagann

OK, nothing I have ever seen has ever been more over the top, stupid and loud.  And I loved it.  This is a perfectly written story with everything you could want.  Action, romance, drama, comedy, giant fighting robots, animal people, space fights, end-of-the-universe disasters and so may lines you'll  catch yourself repeating.  Would be higher on my list if it wasn't for that "realm of anime" thing I mentioned before.

3 - Strawberry Panic

First and foremost, you have to suspend your beliefs a bit with this one.  Ignore the fact that this is a romantic story set in three all-girls Catholic schools that share a dormitory and attended by more schoolgirl lesbians than some major cities.  I'm a straight heterosexual male and I was able to ignore that fact.  At it's core, this is a very good story and the characters are interesting.  Eventually you do begin to ignore the fact that this is a sapharric romance tale and begin to just focus on the individual characters and the plot.  Plus, it anime.  Most guys in anime look like girls anyway.

2 - Shuffle!

You're going to see a pattern with these last three, and no it's the lesbian thing.

Shuffle! is one of the first romance/harem series I ever saw and it has stuck with me.  The plot is dumb and pretty boring, but it's based on a Visual Novel/Game where your whole point is to just pick a girl, so I guess I can't bitch too much about the plot.  But I can say that once you get past the sugar sweet, diabetes inducing first half of the series, the second half get much, much darker.  It's worth the wait too. (The first half does have some good comedy)

1 - Clannad, Clannad-After Story

I have to do these two together since they make up the whole story.  Again, romantic storyline, and even tries to act like a harem series, but it's pretty clear from the start who the two main characters are.  Clannad is a typical high school anime with hints of harem and mystic forces thrown in for good measure.  After Story is an emotional rollercoaster...(rollercosters go up and down and twist and do loops and shit)...this is more like one of those rides that lifts you 100 stories in the air than drops you straight down.  If you watch this series and can't even shed one manly tear at some point, you are an emotionless robot, or dead, or not watching the right series.

As always, these are just my Top 5.  Yours may vary, so I'm not responsible for any hurt feelings.

Fortune Cookie

Actual fortune from today's lunch fortune cookie:

If a turtle doesn't have a shell,
is it naked or homeless?

First, how the hell is this a "fortune"?

Second, the correct answer to this is a turtle without a shell is usually DEAD.

Perfect Job.

Still job hunting.

Pesonally, I want a zombie apocalypse. I feel I'm qualified for surviving that. At least I'm think I'm more qualified for that than most of the jobs I see out there.

Just me complaining

I hate having depression. Well, love/hate, really.

On one hand it really gets me thinking about things, mostly giving me a wealth of ideas if I were ever to begin writing again.

On the other, I'm really not in the mood to start writing anything.

Anyway, enough with my issues.

Oh, added yet another web comic to the links section. Check out Questionable Content, just be prepared to read about two days worth of archives in order to catch up. But is reallty worth it.

Worst. Week. Ever.

Monday: Glasses Broke.
Tuesday: Leg gets stuck in two feet of mud at work. Attempt to pull it out results in a severly pulled thigh.
Wednesday: Flu(?) causes loss of hearing in right ear.
Thursday: (Technally, very early Friday morning) Son throws up in crib. Clean it up. Son throws up on toy couch. Clean it up. Son throws up in garbage can.
Friday: Step on nail at work, goes through boot into foot. Bloody sock. Get home, open mail, $110 speeding ticket (fuck you, speed cameras)

I'm affraid for my life at this point.

WTF Chuck?!

Okay, my mind has been blown.

I have endured numerous childeren's programing since my son was born. Barny, Elmo, Yo Gabba Gabba, Backyardigans, The Wiggles....I get'em. Simple, basic, geared for kids, got it. But the recent discovery of The Adventures of Chuck & Friends has caused me to question way to many things.

At its base, the show is about anthropomorphic cars and trucks who have adventures and learn about life. But when you actually begin to look at this show you really begin to question things.

1. Chuck is a dump truck. His mother is a forklift and his father is a big rig. Let that sink in a second. Now I have to wonder about vehicular mating. I really can't imagine sex or reproduction, so how do they have a kid? Did they just go to a dealership and pick one out?

2. Chuck's mother works at a mechanic shop, which for a society of cars would make one assume it to be similar to a hospital. Yet in one episode Chuck needs to go to a doctor so his mother brings him to see an ambulance (doctor) AT A HOSPITAL! If they have doctors and hospitals, what the fuck is the mechanic for? Also, why couldn't his mother fix him is she is a mechanic?

3. Chuck and his friends are always building of doing something that would require hands and feet to accomplish, yet they always explain what they want to do, then cut to a finished product. How the hell do cars who have no arms, legs, hands or feet, build crate forts or sand castles?

I swear I can't stop thinking about the mind blowing questions about this show. My wife has tried to compare it to the logic and premise behind Spider-Man. A high school kid gaining the powers of a spider after being bitten by a radioactive spider makes perfect sence, especially compared to the mating rituals of tractor trailers.

Random Thoughts

If "Love means never having to say you are sorry" then I wonder how many men have actually been in love.

I hate Christmas. And I hate being sick. So right now really sucks.

What makes Hot Wheels and Legos better than Matchbox and Mega Blocks?

Card Games on Motorcycles!

Why is it that I will have thousands of thoughts throughout the day, yet when I go to post them here, my mind goes blank. Man, that sucks.

Where Have I Been

So, yeah...

It's been a while. Between work sending me to a naval base to finish a job because the guy working the job was fired for being an idiot, then getting sent back to the high school as the project is on its final leg of completion, being a loving husband and father, the Saints starting their defence of their Super Bowl Championship and the video games....oh the games....I've been busy. Get off my back.

Speaking of video games, I've been catching up on some older titles. Mass Effect 2, City of Heroes: Going Rogue, Dragon Age: Origins, the new Left 4 Dead DLC "The Sacrifice", Dragon Age again, Overlord II, more Dragon Age, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 and even more Dragon Age (what? something is compelling me to play it.) Add to it my new favorite website: http://www.haloloz.com/ and I've neglected this blog. but, I'm going to try and post whenever I can. So, here is a few things I thing are funny until I post again.

Welcome

I have created this blog so that I can have a place to document the random and sometimes mundane thoughts that pop into my head over the course of a day. Opinions on movies and video games, some random Top 5's (lots of Top 5's, actually), and even a Hall of Fame of Horror Movie Survivors are all a few of the things that have crossed my mind throughout the day. Now I have a place to share them with the unsuspecting world. Honestly, if you are reading this blog, you either actually like what I have to say, or you clearly are one bored individual. Either way, thanks for stopping by.
